Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday praised the work done to improve the economic condition of women associated with self-help groups under his government’s rural livelihood project. He said that the number of ‘Jeevika Didis’ in the form of women self-help groups has increased to 1.30 crore in the State.
While interacting with media persons during his Samadhan Yatra in Katihar, CM Nitish Kumar said that Jeevika Didi is doing a wonderful job and this model has ensured empowerment of women in a big way. He is getting appreciation all over the world. His works and livelihood model are being praised in developed countries as well.
He said that it is a matter of great satisfaction that the total number of women associated with Jeevika is now 1.30 crore. He said that through various livelihood measures under Jeevika, women have been able to improve the economic condition of their families.
The Bihar Rural Livelihoods Project, popularly known as Jeevika, has had a transformative impact on the lives of women. It was started in 2006 in 4000 villages in 42 blocks of six districts (Gaya, Khagaria, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Nalanda and Purnea) benefiting 590000 families. A senior government official associated with the project said that its main objective is to enhance the social and economic empowerment of the rural poor in Bihar.
